Christmas decorating ..

i don't have any pics to share of interior decorating this Christmas .. but when rod and i managed our first storage facility, i hosted a family get-to-gether and thought i would share pics of the way i had our apartment decorated ..

if you know anything about such facilities, the managers apartment is not always the most luxurious .. it can happen, but not often .. but we made do with what we had and i think it turned out pretty nice and everyone seemed to have a good time ... and isn't that what is important... you can click on these pics and they will enlarge ..

doing last minute preparations .. i am the type that wants everything to be perfect .. sometimes i am successful .. sometimes not ..

i weeded out a lot of things in these photos when we had our sale in november ..

i love this cabinet and love the quilts and blankets .. i made the stockings for rod and i out of two old tablecloths, one white and one red and white ..

i sold off most of these putz houses at our recent sale .. and i have already replaced most of them with larger, though newer versions ... sold off the santas also and am thinking snowmen ..

i think it is finished .. see the burgundy chair near the tv - 4 days before this event i decided it needed a slipcover - made one of burgundy velvet .. the pillows i got at wallyworld ..

my middle sis, loves fancy things .. she and i share a love of good rich foods .. we are the first to eat a blue cheese stuffed olive .. while the rest of the family are going ... eeewww ..

sister dressed in blue velvet .. she was excited with how i had everything decorated and was taking pics .. the slipcovered chairs at the dining table are actually vintage 1960s office chairs on wheels .. very comfortable .. we ate buffet style ..

the table is set .. just some minor tweaking .. the crackers in the transfer tureen are a recipe i dug up that are the same crackers they sell at zapp hall - though i added some other ingredients .. and i bake them lightly ..

later that day - after everything was cleaned up i took some quick pics of the table ... the bundt cake on the table to the right was made by my baby sis, it is an old bundt cake pan painted and decorated to look like a real bundt cake .. very cute ..

the bench across the back is a wonderful old trunk .. we used it to hold our sets of china .. the big packages on one end are actually velvet pillows made to look like packages .. i made them especially for the party ..

hope you enjoyed my pics ... wish i had a place to decorate this year .. so i think that will be my Christmas Wish this year .. i home ..

love to you all,

troy & rod

UPDATED: vintage Christmas monday .. no. 4

thanks to joan at anything goes here for organizing a great blog party - vintage Christmas monday .. hit the links and check out what others are blogging about on 'vintage Christmas monday .. no. 4 '.

i love ornaments like these - i found these at a thrift store this past week - i will not be selling these as i want to use them for a season. i love the spun cotton snowman .. and the tiny tiny bottle brush trees in white .. they are in wonderful shape ..

this one has the same white bottle brush foliage but a plastic santa in his sleigh - i like the color of the ornament itself on this one.. i love green ..

and blue .. i love blue, too ... though this may be more teal than blue .. and i think this little plastic guy is more belsnickel than the more americanized santa we have come to know and love .. still love these ornaments - they are glass - which makes them more special in my opinion ..

also found a cute santa planter, which is more the style of santa we here in Texas grew up with .. i may or may not sell him - he cleaned up kind of nice though and has a nice size opening in the top of his head - perfect for candy canes or biscotti - i love biscotti ..

have a great day ... and enjoy the season .. and make it a point to tell someone today that you love them.

love,
troy & rod

when angels wink at you ...

i have been reading a book titled 'when God winks at you' ..it is wonderful, if you find a copy, read it ..
anyway, i believe those we love who have died are now our guardian angels .. and when i feel their presence i think of it as a wink .. a nudge to remind us they are still with us..
my momma is such an angel .. when i am feeling blue or wondering how different life would be today had she lived, had we not honored her wish for a DNR .. she winks at me .. and i feel less torn apart about the decision we made to honor her wishes..
this year, i am missing my momma something terribly .. she collected clowns and dolls, especially clown dolls ..
and you may think this strange, but so far this Christmas there seemed to be a shortage of clowns in my world .
just when i was getting sad about the fact i hadn't seen any clowns and wondering where had all the clowns gone .. this morning rod and i stopped into a little local church run thrift store ..
as you enter the store there is a table laid out with Christmas decorations, cast off tree lights, mismatched ornaments, plastic shiny garland, gently used gift bags and the like .. it has been up and in place since the weekend of Thanksgiving .. there is rarely any thing of real value or sentiment there ..
but you always looks anyway ..
i glanced at it this morning and wandered my way to the back of the store to visit with some of the little ladies who work the shop.. they never fail to lift my spirits and almost always do something to remind me of my momma ..
this morning there was one who could have been mommas twin .. same short curly white hair .. same jogging suit uniform .. same girlish twinkle in her eye .. same, same.
the emotion of mommas absence overwhelmed me and i found myself retreating to the confines of the pots and pans .. circling my way back around to the front entrance of the store ..and the table of Christmas cast-offs at the entrance..
there nestled within the hollow of discarded Christmas garland and twisted tinsel lie this wonderful ornament ..

thank you, momma .. Merry Christmas .. i love you and miss you so much ..

where are my glasses?

we went out this morning to a few sales and thought for a moment we might set up at the local flea - but the light rain and very cold temps stopped us ..

so, first thing out the door - we were almost to the 1st sale and i realized i had forgotten my keys - rod was driving and there was really no need for me to have my keys - however, i still felt naked without them jingling around in my coat pocket. ..

then all morning i'm feeling this bunch in my shorts - so to speak - 1st trip to the mens room and i realize i got my shorts on backwards - my boxer shorts - have no idea how that happened .. and maybe that is TMI .. but it felt real weird .. jez, i'm getting old kind of weird ..

then we hit a sale .. found some great stuff ..

... and i spot the most wonderful sheep trophy - and it was marked a single buck - $1 - i scoop it up and am so proud of myself - cause you see i know someone who collects sheep stuff and i was so proud of the fact i spotted this great piece - so i carry it all around the sale with me while i gather other things and hand them off to be placed in 'our pile' - i do not let my sheep out of site - in fact i even devise a way i can hold him in my hand and still grab something else - not going to let my sheep out my hands - someone else might get him - someone else might see he is only a buck and offer the seller more for my wonderful sheep trophy -

anyway, so i go through all of that with the sheep - get home - searching through all the bags for my sheep trophy so i can snap a picture and get him listed - that is when i realize my sheep is a cow -

rod's right, i need to wear my glasses more often -

have a good day - enjoy the season -

off to list on etsy - meanwhile, enjoy some pics of the smalls we found this morning - not pictured that we found are a machine age office desk, a wonderful old oak library table with tenons at the joints, a childs doll chest of drawers (once saw a sign that advertised chester drawers), a folding trolley tea cart, a gorgeous large painted victorian frame, a set of cameo dishes by harkerware, a set of eternally yours silverplate flatware in the chest, a sweet tranfersware turkey platter ..

also not shown .. an old boy scout type flag, a harvard felt banner, a vanderbilt cap and banner and an old wallpapered bathroom wastebasket in pink ..

vintage Christmas monday

thanks to anything goes here for organizing a great blog party - vintage Christmas monday -it totally slipped my mind and i had already picked out the item i was going to highlight - i found this little cutie some weeks ago, started to list it on etsy and thought i would save it to highlight here first ..

now, what i loooove about this piece, is the title of the book Santa is reading .. i have seen him reading books that say .. good boys .. and .. good girls .. but never, ever have i seen him reading a book that said .. "Santa's List For Good Mommies"...
so, are you a good mommie or a bad mommie? .. yeah, the wizard of oz is still stuck in my head ...

oh, this is a little bell, there is a clapper inside and you hold onto Santa hat and ring the bell.. kind of cute ..

have a good day today .. and remember, our give-a-way ends tomorrow and the winner will be picked and announced tomorrow evening ..

we went to canton yesterday, then we drove over to see judy hills open house ..

here are some pics of canton to share ..

if you know canton, you know this is the booth of donnie & lee - i don't know them personally, but i know some of you do - i love stopping into their booth - they have some of the nicest displays and their expertise in layering is legendary ..

donnie & lee ..
love this patriotic snowman - also at donnie & lees' ...

the tree in this pic was awesome in person - you can't really tell it from here - but it has an antique feather tree quality .. it was loaded with wonderful silhouette ornaments .. donnie & lee are located in pavillion 2 .. just foller the crowds ..

this top hat tree topper was in our friend, nonis' booth - she had some cute things and we ended up buying some great putz houses from her - i thought i took pictures of them, but can't find them. .. i will post pics of them later ..

more of nonis booth, she was the 1st person out at canton to carry these wonderful canister sets .. she also has some of the best prices on home decor items .. she is located in pavillion 3 ..

girls gone junkin - is an awesome booth - they are located along the main drag, aka dealer row at the corner of dealer row and row 11, next to the creek - look for the pink crown on the front of the building..

the entrance to girls gone junkin - notice the pink crown ..

i don't know whose booth this was .. i snapped a quick pic because i liked the Christmas display - it was in arbor 1 ...

another arbor 1 booth .. again, i don't know whose booth this was .. if it belongs to you or someone you know, let me know and i will post it ..

the last two pics above were also from arbor 1 .. and again, i don't know whose booth it was .. i just really liked the booth ..if you know, let me know .. there wasn't anyone in the booth when we went through ..

then we headed out to judy hills - it was almost 1pm by the time we left canton, so almost 2pm by the time we got to judys - having never been i wasn't sure what the protocol on picture taking was .. so i only took pics of the outside ..
i loved the santa - captured - makes you smile a little -
there was a stone pathway that lead up to the steps of the house - i loved the gate with the planters and poinsettias .. the lone hand dolly by the gate told me it had been a very busy day ...
the front porch was set for Christmas indeed. lots of silver, lots of green .. lots of galvanized metal .. it really got you in the mood for what lay behind the doors ..

we were greeted as we entered by a very pleasant woman who informed us to make ourselves comfortable and told us we were free to roam throughout the house .. i just remember being mesmerized and drawn to the chandelier from an atrium above the dining room table - it was dressed in twigs, and branches and vintage aluminum tree branches and ornaments that had lost their luster and color and yet still twinkled and danced in the soft afternoon light - it was as if some mechanical faerie bird had left behind it's nest .. i think my mouth watered a time or two .. every room was gathered and worked to the ninth degree .. yet, it all seemed so effortless and comfortable .. the living room with it's curved 3 piece french sectional, covered in white - white what, i don't remember, i think it was matelasse .. sitting at the edge of a white shag style rug .. in front of a huge white feather style Christmas tree, decorated with rolled sheet music and book page ornaments .. mounted in the center of an old porch column pedestal.. surrounded by shredded book pages .. this room looked off into a sunroom that streamed with light ... and was set with what looked to have been an enticing buffet of cookies, cheeses, breads, spreads and meats .. i didn't linger or sample the food .. but wound my way through the kitchen and around that incredible mannequin/doll/santos figure that regally graced the center island in the kitchen .. around those incredible galvanized stove pipe columns .. into the laundry room .. yes the laundry room was even decorated .. and the beautiful old victorian screen door in all it's chippy white splendor that was used as the pantry door .. my head was about to explode .. then i was back in the dining room ... smiling .. and head nodding ...across the living room .. near the white fireplace mantel .. did i mention that everything, everything was in colors of white, cream, natural .. the mantel was accented with 3 evenly spaced pails from a chicken feeder - i swear they looked and reminded me of those old metal kitchen match holders - they were attached to the front header of the mantel and stuffed with shredded paper - and i think there may have been vintage ornaments nestled into the paper .. then i caught a glimpse of a bed, layered and layered .. did someone say princess and the pea? ... the biggest bedroom was like a suite in a fine boutique hotel ...that drew you in and through and made you want to touch .. the bed was set with judys signature bedding .. i was particularly drawn to a burlap pillow accented with guaze roses - that gave it an early art nouveau look - there was a bench as the foot of the bed - covered in a beautiful piece that looked like needlepoint half done and tacked into place with upholstery nails - not the tacks, the blue head nails - awesome! - .. my feet were taking me into a room that was filled with florals on the walls - were they roses? i don't remember, i think so, but there were so many layers in this room .. mirrors, snow .. wait, there was a table in this room, in the center .. oh look, in the center of the table the vase filled with twigs and aluminum branches .. wait.. there's a huge umbrella in the center of the table .. in the center of the room ... filling the room .. in all its ruffled edge glory! ..whats that beyond? .. oh my goodness! this is a bathroom!! .. there is a clawfoot tub on the other side of this table set with it's fancy umbrella .. the tub appeared to set in an alcove .. trimmed with victorian era stick and ball trim... that had wonderful old bottles and paint brushes hanging from the spindles .. then back into the bedroom and out into the hallway .. into a smaller room that was a blur of putz houses, mirrors, vintage Christmas items and newer items made to look vintage ... mirrors layered on mirrors .. white on white on cream on white .. into a bedroom that looked out across the front yard .. it was set with more of judys bedding and featured golden Christmas balls .. slightly tarnished to a warm brassy color .. they dangled from the tiny ruffled edges .. above the bed hung on old divided light window draped in beautiful embroidered lace .. back down the hallway .. there were three vintage male mannequin torsos - stripped down to their craft paper color bases - hanging one next to the other ... and around the corner into a smaller room which appeared to be manly study .. set with worldly things .. awesome seasons of cannon falls glitter trees and glitter words in the tarnished silver line .. along one wall in separate corners where matching 1930s era arm chairs .. they had been stripped to their framework and reupholstered in burlap, sans padding at the arms or sides .. again, blue head upholstery tacks had been used and were visible..
back into the hall and we were where we had began our tour .. my mind was reeling ...

we motioned a hello to judy and she came over to greet us - she remembered us from canton and the gliders we used to reupholster and sell to her .. we chatted for awhile about the times, the business .. she apologized that we didn't get to see everything when it was all in place ..we assured her we were impressed and awed adequately so .. and there was no need to apologize, but that is judy .. as gracious as there ever was a hostess ..

it was getting late and i knew the drive back would be long for rod - so sherry, rod and i said our goodbyes and headed home - our minds properly inspired ..

the one thing i would have done different .. i would have been there on the opening hour .. if nothing else than to just see the excitement that must have been ..

laterz,
troy & rod
